My Favorite Things: A Yuletide List
While out and about driving recently, the constant barrage of Christmas songs on the radio yielded a version of “My Favorite Things”, made popular from the musical “The Sound of Music”.
My youngest chimed in. “How is this a Christmas song?”
“Well,” I said, trying to sound knowledgeable and Dad-like, “ – I guess it could remind you of the things you like for the holidays, or an inspiration to think about things you’d want for Christmas.”
“Rain drops on roses? Whiskers on kittens?” came the reply.
I shrugged my shoulders. “I don’t think it’s a literal list,” I replied.
She shook her head in acknowledgement, but gave me that sideways glance that I often get from a teenager when they aren’t sure you really answered anything.
Anyway, it got me to thinking about my own “favorite things” – the holiday edition. I present them to you below (in no particular order):
- Homemade chocolate chip cookies
- Nat King Cole’s version of “The Christmas Song”
- Staring at my decorated tree as it lights up the darkened living room
- Holiday naps (or naps in general – they rock)
- Wearing a scarf in cold weather
- Community/outdoor light displays
- Candy canes
- Poinsettias on a church altar
- Santas with real beards
- Watching “A Charlie Brown Christmas” on DVD
- Leroy Anderson’s instrumental/orchestra version of “Sleigh Ride”
- Coffee with Bailey’s Irish Cream
- Viewing a model railroad holiday display
- Watching people unwrap gifts on Christmas morning
- The four-part harmony of a church choir singing “Joy to the World”
What’s your holiday list of “favorite things” consist of? I hope the season finds you experiencing all of them this year!
