A “Charlie Brown” Christmas: Small Town Living at its Best

A “Charlie Brown” Christmas: Small Town Living at its Best

Living in a rural area has its advantages and disadvantages.  For example, it’s hard to find fine dining options, but I could probably get you a good deal on a cord of firewood for the winter.  One thing that the four-state area has an abundance of; however, is good, old-fashioned Christmas displays and celebrations.  One of the best is continuing through this weekend, and you should get out and see it if you can.

The Williamsport “Charlie Brown” Christmas at the Springfield Barn.

This event has all of the hallmarks of small town ambiance, and is lovingly put on each year by a bevy of community volunteers from Williamsport, MD.  If you’ve never experienced this event, you should.  First of all, it has a great location.  The Springfield Barn is a beautiful venue, and the barn itself is wonderful to look at (even when not decorated for the holidays).  Now, imagine the interior filled with over 100 decorated and lit Christmas trees from local organizations and families.  The colors and holiday sparkles will make even the grinchiest soul’s heart grow three sizes.  There is a train display, and Santa and Mrs. Claus are on hand to talk to kids (or kids at heart).  The best part of all?  It’s free (although donations are greatly appreciated).

Not only are the trees on display at the barn, but they also offer horse-drawn wagon rides (for a small fee, weather permitting) and the Williamsport Town Museum and Springfield Tenant House are also open and sport holiday trimmings.

If you visit after dark, you can also take a ride (or walk) through Byron Memorial Park, which features a wonderful display of Christmas lights that you can leisurely glide through in your car (or stroll down the hill from the barn, if you’re up for a little hike) .  Holiday carols are piped into the area, and the whole park is a winter wonderland.  You may even get a candy cane from volunteers.

It’s hard not to get into the spirit of the season at these types of local events.  Take the time to explore the region’s holiday offerings!
