Autumn is Here – Let the Rejoicing Begin!

Autumn is Here – Let the Rejoicing Begin!

Ahhhh, fall – my favorite time of the year, and October is my favorite month.

Nothing beats the sights, sounds, and colors of autumn! (image credit – theartoftravel.net)

We kicked it off right with a full “harvest” moon (and will be treated to a second full “blue” moon on Halloween this year).  There’s even an extra hour of sleep built in to the last weekend of the month, as we’ll be “falling back” to Standard Time.

Temperatures in my neck of the woods have settled into the low 70’s during the day and are dropping into the low 50’s at night – perfect weather to fling open those bedroom windows and sleep in the cool, night air (even though my neighbor across the street has obtained three – yes, three – new dogs that love to bark at all hours – 3:00 AM and 5:00 AM seem to be perennial favorites).

The leaves are slowly starting to change, turning the mountains behind my house into a sea of brilliant reds, oranges, and yellows.  The blooming mums provide a kaleidoscope of autumnal color.  I can sit on my front porch and enjoy a good book while the cherry trees along my street front are slowly dropping their foliage, each leaf almost whispering as it releases from its branches, floating down onto the sidewalk and giving my steps an autumnal crunch as I walk to and from the post office.

It’s time to look for “woolly bear” caterpillars, their bands of brown and black used to prognosticate the severity of the coming winter months that lie ahead.

This year’s mum collection in my own backyard. I love this time of year!

I’m unearthing my fall wardrobe, piling on the layers of fleece, long-sleeve henleys, and flannel.  Quilts and soft blankets are reappearing on the back of my sofa and at the foot of my bed, just waiting to be wrapped around chilly shoulders.  Thick, fluffy socks are the new normal.

It’s the time of year for warm cider, apple butter, and roasted root vegetables.  Grilled cheese sandwiches and tomato soup, served piping hot in oversized mugs.  Casseroles, stews, and slow-cookers.

Reese’s peanut butter pumpkins.

Seasonal “Oktoberfest” beer.

Even though the pandemic has limited many of the seasonal fall festivals and gatherings, it’s still a special time of year.

Get out there and enjoy it!

  1. Favorite thing about fall, no more hot humid days when you feel like your melting when you walk outside! Windows up all day, blinds the whole way up all through the house, since you don’t have to keep the heat out, and yes a window still open in the bedroom at night for fresh air and to hear the trains. Waiting for enough leaves to fall to make a big pile for kids to jump in. Hearing the crunch and smell of the fallen leaves as you walk through them and the gorgeous colors on our mountains. Crisp fall air, nothing like it! Well maybe a couple good snows lol.

  2. I always feel like a seasonal change perks things up. It’s like a new beginning and particularly this year that’s what we need. The heat of summer is over and the crispness of fall is here….time to get out the heavier clothes and change things around.
