Food Trends 2025: What to Expect

Food Trends 2025: What to Expect

Well, it’s a new year and the pundits and prognosticators of the food world are weighing in, telling the eating public what to expect regarding food trends for the new year.  Here are just a few things they say we’ll be seeing more of in restaurants, food trucks, and other eateries.

Freeze-Dried Treats

You’ve probably already seen these at a few specialty food stores or even in some big-box department stores that have food items.  Freeze dried candies (think Skittles and Gummy Bears) and other sweet treats are going the freeze-dried route, and although it’s still a bit of a novelty (and acquired taste), look for more of it in 2025.

Plant-Based Deli Meats

Plant-based meat substitutes are getting better and healthier all the time.  Although still at a premium price point, it’s no worse than the top brands seen at the deli counter (per pound), and the taste is getting almost indistinguishable from the real thing (for those going the vegan/vegetarian route).  Look for more options and varieties in the coming year.

Classic Dishes are Making a Comeback

Who doesn’t love a good meatloaf?  How about deviled eggs?  Grilled cheese, anyone?  These classic comfort foods (and many, many more) are on the upswing and looking to make a return to glory in the coming year.

The Heat Is On!

With the popularity of such internet shows as “Hot Ones”, spicy sauces and rubs are continuing to build on their 2024 momentum.  The latest trend?  “Swicy”, which is a combination of sweet and spicy.  Think honey barbeque, but with eye-watering heat.  Be on the lookout for chili-infused chocolates, spicy maple syrup, and even lemonade with a kick.  It’s hot in here, y’all!

Melons – Time to Shine?

Yes, the lowly melon is taking center stage in 2025.  Look for heirloom varieties and classic favorites popping up in more soups, grilled dishes, and desserts.  Be on the lookout for Hami melons (with a crisp and floral flavor profile) as well as Crenshaws (rich and a little spicy) to start showing up in your produce section and specialty purveyors.
