“Augustoberfest” Celebrates Hagerstown’s German Heritage
Is your travel wish to take part in this year’s Oktoberfest celebrations in Germany? Do you secretly wish you could drink your German beer out of a stein? Do you have a weird affinity for lederhosen? If the answer to any one of these questions is “yes” then you, my friend, are in luck.
This weekend marks the 21st anniversary of the “Augustoberfest” celebration in downtown Hagerstown, MD. Celebrating the German heritage of the four-state area and the 64th year of cooperation and friendship between Hagerstown and its sister city – Wesel, Germany, Augustoberfest is a celebration of all things German – the food, the entertainment, the beer, and of course, a friendly atmosphere and fellowship.
While Hagerstown’s celebration starts a bit earlier than its German counterpart (the celebration in Munich doesn’t kick-off this year until September 17th, 2016), Augustoberfest will provide a fun weekend filled with events, food, and entertainment. In addition, the festival also supports scholarship opportunities for exchange students to Hagerstown’s sister city (supported and run by the Augustoberfest Charitable Foundation).
Weekend events include a 10K and 5K “Fit Walk”, a children’s area, car show, and craft marketplace. There will also be lots of live entertainment provided by Bavarian singers, dancers, and musicians, as well as plenty of German food options and – of course – German beer (woo hoo!)
So grab your schatzchen (sweetie), wander over to the party zelts (party tents), and shout “Prost!” (rhymes with “toast”) when you raise a glass and join the community in a salute to the Rhineland.
“Zicky-Zacky-Zicky-Zacky-Hoy-Hoy-Hoy!”
(try shouting that in the beer tent – you’ll make friends fast!)
