Fall Getaways: Savage River Lodge

Fall Getaways: Savage River Lodge

Fall is the perfect time of year to take a short “getaway” vacation.  Whether it be a weekend or just for a day or two during the week, a few days away from work and home can relax and rejuvenate even the most stressed out soul.  At this time of the year, there are few better places I can think of to relax and unwind than the Savage River Lodge (near Frostburg, MD).

Just getting there is therapeutic.  You leave the hustle and bustle of towns and cities, passing through the mountains of Western Maryland along Interstate 68.  Autumn finds these peaks in full display of glorious fall color, and each one crossed in the journey westward is higher and more stunning than the last.

The last few miles to the lodge are on a steep and winding path, accessible only by a sturdy four-wheel drive vehicle in winter weather (call ahead for their lane conditions), but the reward is 700 acres of forested land that envelops you like a warm blanket.

The comfortable and rustic main lodge is perfectly suited to its environment.  This is the core of the resort, housing the restaurant, bar, gift shop, library, and other amenities.  Here, you can have a tasty, seasonal meal (their menu features gourmet American cuisine), linger over a glass or bottle of wine (daily tastings are offered), or just sit in a rocking chair on the porch, close your eyes, and listen to the quiet serenity of the mountains.

The accommodations are first rate, ranging from cozy two-story cabins to comfortable and unique circular yurts – all with fine amenities and luxurious appointments.  The 18 cabins have gas-fire places, large front porches, and – the best part – no televisions.  In the morning, fresh juice and muffins will be delivered to your door.  For a more memorable experience, try “glamping” in one of their eight circular tents (or yurts).  No, this isn’t your grandfather’s tent.  These sturdy structures house a king-sized bed, radiant floor heating, plush comforters, and an attached deck (as well as a private bath, shower, and double sinks).

Time at the Savage River Lodge can be spent reading a good book, taking a long, uninterrupted walk in the woods – or just doing nothing.  It’s up to you.  You can even use the lodge as a home base for exploring the local area during the day.  It’s only a short drive to Frank Lloyd Wright’s masterpiece of architecture and engineering, “Falling Water”.

If you are looking for a relaxing respite from the hustle and bustle of the “real world”, look no further than the Savage River Lodge.  Learn more about the resort or book a stay by visiting their website at www.savageriverlodge.com.
